the GNU configure script should pay attention to this setting of CFLAGS and not override it.

I've always tried to edit that flag out of makefiles, but this damn thing has a makefile in every subdirectory so I'd have to edit several dozen.

You can also put "WANT_FORCE_OPTIMIZATION_DOWNGRADE=yes" in /etc/make.conf and rebuild world.
