Hi everyone,

I'm a brand new Ubuntu user who lives in Belper in Derbyshire. I have only been
using Linux for a few weeks and am still rather lacking in confidence with the
system, particularly the terminal window, as I have spent all of my computer
using life in a battle with MS of various forms. Linux was recommended to me by
a work colleague but it took me six months to pluck up the courage to give it a
try. So I bought an elderly second hand laptop off eBay and took the plunge. I
chose the Ubuntu distro as it seemed best suited for absolute beginners like me.
I also invested in the book "Ubuntu for Non-Geeks" which has been a great help.
I have had several problems but I have been able to solve all of them using the
various forums. The system is now working well and I am impressed by its
stability and the ease of adding new software. Even my wife is happy to use
Ubuntu, but is rather addicted to Frozen Bubble.

Does anyone know of a LUG that meets on a regular basis near Derbyshire? I have
tried the LUG UK website but have not had any response. I would like to meet
some fellow users face-to-face to get some inspiration from how other people are
using their systems.

Cheers,

Hi Barry,

First of all welcome to the list. Good to see you're getting on well with Ubuntu. There's a load of us on the list who are always happy to lend a hand if someone gets stuck. With regards to a local LUG, I never was very good with geography so it might not be of much use but when I was living in Derby a couple of years back there was a Derby LUG (albeit I can't seem to find them now). I also found a South Derby LUG (not sure if it's the same one) which you can find the mailing list for here: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/sderby/

Hopefully this will give you something to go on.
