That should work.
Thanks for the help, _Mike

Well, it would be problematic if you tried to access the Gears data directly (i.e. not from a web app). Or if you tried to install Gears manually, instead of directing users to the Gears download page.
But it looks like you're not doing either of those, so everything sounds good. :)
To detect the presence of Gears, you should be able to look for "%PROGRAMFILES%\Google\Google Gears". Will that work for you?

Sure, I have a locally installed application which is used for various things which interact with local hardware. I have a web page which manages the data, and should be able to go offline using gears. The web page also uses gears to communicate with the local app. utilizing the sqllite DB which underlies gears. Is that clear? Do you have a specific question about my situation?
I am using NSIS to write my installer for the local app, and would like to have it do the gears installation. Of course, it would be nice if it could detect if gears is installed already before it sent the user to the gears website. So that is why I am asking about it. Thanks. _Mike

Hm, it's not clear to me how an installed (non-browser-based) app would interact with Gears.
Can you provide more details about what you're trying to achieve?

Hi I am writing an installed application (windows), and I would like to know during my installation if I should direct the user to download gears, or if I can bypass that step. Is there a specific windows registry key I can look for to see if gears is installed? I could find anything the jumped out at me in my registry, so I am asking here. Thanks, _Mike
