Hey Matt,

The correct mime-type should be 'text/xml'. However in spite of my previous post, I don't think setting the mime-type really helps with the hosting issues, but it couldn't hurt. Just make sure you don't set the wrong one ;)

Cheers, Dann

Just curious, should the mime-type for the xml spec be text/xml or application/xml?

Hi all,

Well if it is the lack of text/xmlmime type assignment causing these symptoms, it's being pretty inconsistent.. but I'll try it. In fact I was going to explicitly set the mime types on every file hosted onGoogleCode.

I use tortoise as my svn client at the moment and I set the mime types through that; right click on file(s) -> properties -> subversion tab ->
properties -> then add / edit so that the property is set

accordingly e.g. svn:mime-type text/xml svn:mime-type image/gif svn:mime-type image/png

and I suppose to be strict about thing I should also set it for any javascript files too? Is this correct? Should it set to svn:mime-type application/x-javascript? I guess so but confirmation would be great.

Hey Bonstio,

Considering that you've set the MIME types for all your images, have you also set custom MIME types for your gadgetXML? For example, GoogleCode currently returns a text/plain response for gadgets:

Have you tried setting this to text/xmlinstead? It shouldn't matter because we accept plain text gadget specs, but it may be worth experimenting.

Also, can you share how you set the MIME types inGoogleCode? Perhaps other people may want to try this as well.

Thanks!

Dann

All my image tags are stored inGoogleCode svn. I have also very carefully set the MIME types of all the various images to images/png image/gif or whatever. Not doing this was causing me a problem with some images apparently never loading. Of course this MIME type problem was different to the whole gadget being unavailable.

This problem is very sporadic and I have noticed no pattern to it. For me it breaks very occasionally and usually comes back after one or two refreshes. I will try and grab some HTTP headers if I catch it breaking in the hope that this will shed some light...

Yeah, they're all broken again for me, and none of my gadgets have embed or img tags.

Mine point to googlecode.com.

here's a crazy question: can you guys check to see where your images and other content is being served from? e.g. where do your <img src=> and <embed src=> tags point to?

Hey Wisgary,

Thanks for actively monitoring and posting your feedback!

Please do continue posting your results. Your last response was the first positive one in a long time, and it is a good sign. However, we're definitely not giving up and are still paying very close attention to this problem.

Thanks again!

Don't know if it's the time of the day or what, but now it's working 100% of the time, all of them. Tried many times and they are now working perfectly, even some of adam bowman's gadgets which weren't working before. I'll let you know if it stays this way.

Things are definitely looking up, my gadgets are now loading 4 out of 5 times, with two exceptions, one good and one bad, bejeweled, which seems to be loading every
timehttp://www.google.com/ig/directory?url=http://bejeweledg.googlecode.c... and Googletranslationhttp://www.google.com/ig/directory?url=http://translateg.googlecode.c... which seems to be loading about 2/5 times.

My gadgets have started to load more frequently. Some load more often than others. I'd say that if I refresh the page 5 times, with all of my gadgets on at the same time, I'd say the more frequently loading ones load 2 out of 5 times. The less frequently loading ones load somewhere around 1 times out of 10.

A performance update was applied to the subversion server over the weekend, which we hoped would help. However, it looks like the problem still persists.

Please continue to post periodic updates regarding your gadgets hosted on GoogleCode. Your feedback has been of great help so far in monitoring this problem, and we appreciate your patience as we figure this out.

Thanks!

Not much change with most of my gadgets, but during yesterday, Sunday 18th, I saw two of my gadgets working intermittently, Bejeweled and Googletranslation.

I have never seen my gadgets load since the problem started. They only load when on websites, such as my page herehttp://www.wisgary.com/gadgets/ but I have never seen them load on my personalized homepage as of yet.

Just wanted to give a quick status update and let you know that we're actively looking into this problem right now.

Has there been any changes in behavior, and how often does the gadget fail to load? More or less than 50% of the time?

Thanks, Dann

Hey everyone,

Fortunately, we tracked down what was causing this problem. We discovered that a Subversion client was sending repeated requests for a large file from one of the hosted projects. Somehow, this created a ripple effect that was causing problems for other projects as well. As a result, gadgets hosted on GoogleCodewere failing to respond at random moments. Yesterday we disabled the problematic project which helped clear up the data flood that was occurring. GoogleCodeshould be serving your gadget files promptly now.

If you haven't done so already, please retest your gadgets that are hosted on googlecode.com and confirm that they are loading correctly again.
