are you sure that you downloaded the stable version ?. auth seems to be brocken in the cvs snapshot.

also make sure you use the right crypt methode. if in doubt try cleartext passwords. if it works with cleartext it's likely a problem of encryption. if not it maybe a problem of your version or another configuration issue.

I'm using courier 0.39.1 and courier-imap 1.5.1

when I'm using clearPassword I get the "chdir: No such file or directory" entry in the logfile. Is there any possibility to know which directory courier means?
