Additionally, the XPath support is pretty much impossible to accomplish.

For an attempt at a strongly-typed API for XPath processing, see Saxon's s9api interface. It is of course oriented to the requirements of XPath 2.0. (But surely no-one wants to define a new API that only supports XPath 1.0...)
