not just this ... I also believe that for many, but not all, working
taxonomists, it would be very useful *to them* to have an up-to-date website to
consult for reliable information on nomenclature and to check out the latest
publications in their own taxonomic group ... I constantly see examples where
this would have been a good idea ...
having said that, probably the main reason for the current boom in biodiversity
databases is that you can get funding for it, and it keeps people employed.
Whether it is actually of any real use to anybody is another question ...

In contrast, the day-to-day work of biodiversity science (pests/diseases, flora
and fauna surveys, etc etc) is best served by taxonomically limited or
geographically limited resources which have been compiled by specialists.
Why then are global social science websites such as Project Noah, iNaturalist,
iSpot, Mushroom Observer etc so popular, so well used and provide a vehicle for
non-specialists to make a contribution to biodiversity and Biosecurity?
The socialisation of science needs a "Gigantic All-Names All-Species Online
Taxonomic Resource (GAAOTR)".
