It's the same way the ads are displayed when you are searching, it's no different.

I've always stayed away from Gmail as I heard that Google read your email in order to target ads at you. Even if it is just a machine rather than a person, it's overstepped the privacy line for me if this is the case.

Also, I assume that there are therefore ads on the screen too, when you're reading your email?
