It occurs to me that what Martin really wants to do when he "reinstalls" is "upgrade". Currently in quick installer parlance these two concepts are (con)fused. Would the most sense be to think about the upgrade story for products, separately from the reinstall story? I could see requiring quick installable products to register upgrade routines with the quick installer

We already have infrastructure for that: genericsetup upgrade profiles.

i hoep you mean the upgrade infrastructure provided via the <genericsetup:upgradeSteps> ZCML tag (and related tags). i know that Plone invented the idea of actually registering separate import profiles to used for upgrade processes, but this has always seemed to me a brutal hack that was only necessary b/c the upgradeStep stuff hadn't yet been finished.

for the record, i agree w/ martin on this one... yes, reinstall is dangerous, yes, quickinstaller is brain-dead. but Plone has a lot of "gotchas", and not everyone knows all the details about best practices w.r.t. product installation and upgrades as those of us who have been around a while. IMO the current situation makes it too easy to shoot yourself in the foot.
