That is actually a better description of what happens. In my case, with Apple mail, I had to throw the account off-line and then on-line before it updates the new message count. With Thunderbird I don't know how to solve this. Maybe it's something that can be configured on the courier-imap side but I doubt it. Still hoping to find an mua that updates the count.

Evolution does update the count for all folders, if you tell it to do so.
