Interesting, never knew that. I used to have a small Unix training center in Pleasant Hill (city next to Walnut Creek) and tried to get some old FreeBSD CDs from Walnut CDROM. My idea was to give them away free to prospective students. But I was told that all old CDs were instantly destroyed, when a new release came out. Even offering to pay a few $ for each CD did not help.

Well, they are generally destroyed, yes, though if someone makes prior arrangements with Walnut Creek CDROM or I undertake to grab some number of them and send them off to people, that can be done first. You probably asked a good deal after the previous release had come out and they were, in fact, already slated for destruction and declared as such. Once that point is reached, there is indeed no going back. :(
