Ask on a sendmail list. I use exim, I don't know sendmail.

You need to tell sendmail how to query the database to find out whether or not the user exists.

The sendmail docs will (read: should) tell you that. If you can't figure it out, go to a sendmail list and ask them for help. If you choose a certain other mta, though, then I could be more directly helpful.
