I've seen all sorts of ways to insert a crypt password into the database. That's no problem. But the crypt routine needs the user's password _and_ a salt/key.

How does this work in courier? I was unable to find any configuration parameters for a salt or a file containing the salt, etc. I can't imagine that I could put any crypted password in there and courier could just match the salt somehow...

Try using grub-md5-crypt. It creates a perfect password for such places.
