I have a problem whih may be trivial, but still I haven't managed any progress on it in several hours of working and reading docs.

I have installed qmail and Courier-imap on RedHat Linux 7.3

I can authenticate fine by telnetting into port 143.

using the same account in Outlook Express, or any other imap client that I can lay hands on, fails in this way:

Any attempt to get the list of folders fails with the error code 800cccd1 at the client, and the message 'LOGIN FAILED' in the server maillog.

Attempting to read mail authenticates OK, then disconnects without downloading email. Of course, the folders aren't set up correctly.

Any ideas as to where I should start looking?
