Read the procmail-users archive for suggested workarounds.

URL?

It's linked off of http://www.procmail.org. Do a search on "maildir and filename"

In my case I don't use procmail for local delivery and those users who have a .procmailrc invoke procmail but deliveries are piped to a maildir command which delivers them to a properly formatted filename

Is the following setup possible:

A default procmailrc that pipes all mails by default to a maildir command while users can still use procmail for filtering?

Probably. Have to try it and see to be sure.

What "maildir command" would that be? Is it included in the courier imap system?

Sorry. I pulled it down from a link in that archive. The source for Gjermund Sørseth's maildir delivery package can be found at http://www.xyzzy.no

And what about the .forward file? Is this working when using this kind of setup?

I can't answer that for you. I use Exim as my MTA and have it set to only invoke procmail when a .procmailrc exists. Otherwise Exim handles local delivery or forwarding or whatever.
