Hi there...

Just setting up a new 6509. Originally the boot variable in the bootstrap was empty so it booted up to rommon.

As it will unless you have a valid image in bootflash.

In my wisdom I decided to put the following:

boot disk0:c6k222-pk9sv-mz.122-18.SXD2.bin

I assume you typed this from ROMMON. This will boot the router, does not add a boot variable.

using SET command. Now, I've realized that if I upgrade the IOS version ~ this will create a problem. On our other 6509's we have "boot disk0:" instead and this gets around future version upgrades....

How can I change this *without* going back into Rommon mode via a reboot?

Once the router is up add an empty boot variable to the config, "boot system flash disk0:" Now the router will boot the first image on your disk0.

Either that or ammend the bootvar after you upgrade the router to boot what and where you desire, recommended way IMHO.

Dave
