We have a need to transfer customers from one (NFS) volume to another.  Path names/hashes will remain the same.

However, once we move data from one volume to another, customers do not have the ability to remove (read: purge) items that were in their .Trash directory prior to the move.

The only thing sqwebmail related that we move is the address book.  It was my assumption that a gdbm database of messages gets built upon user authentication into sqwebmail.  That is being done, but does that not account for the messages in the trash directory?

Is there something that I am missing here?

You are probably missing something, but only you can figure out what.

Something must've changed when you migrated the data from one box to another, or there's something different in the two hosts' configuration.
