Also, does anyone know who exactly was looking for this "feature"?

From my memory it would serve two groups of people; * users typically are not committers but follow svn and don't want to switch to git. The experience is from the cvs->svn switch that many users took another couple of months to actually do a new checkout.

We also noted that we would support this behavior as getting 100% of the users of kde-svn to do a git checkout on day 1 is going to cause a lot of worries.

* translators that want to see the original docbook files should be able to still use svn for that. I don't know if this is still accurate since afterwards I learned that there are scripts to parse a docbook and get all the individual strings out of that into .po files. So why would a translator need a checkout of koffice/doc then?

* stuff like dirks dashboard would continue working without rewrite.
