2950 EMI / SMI has something in hardware to stop you from loading EMI code on an SMI purchased switch. It may be something as simple as a code in some eeprom, I don't know, but it is hardware restricted.

Is the SMI to EMI upgrade on either the 3750 or 3550 a software upgrade or an actual hardware upgrade as it is with the 2950?

2950 is a hardware upgrade? What will they change?
