I compiled 1.6.3 on Sarge with no problems. It appears you are just missing standard libraries. What version of gcc do you have on your system? Try going to http://www.debian.org and clicking the packages link. The search there for the version of gcc on your system and it will tell you other packages that are required/suggested for that version of gcc.
