Interesting. What is the message ? I used to compile/link with egcs/pgcc which are very close to 2.8.1. I even compiled an ELF kernel :-)

Have you also got working ELF bootloader? If so, would you mind pointing me to where it is? (Yes, I know there was post on -current list, but it points to freefall, and I've no access there).

Oh, BTW, thanks again for XFree patches.
