The only problem I see is that the people who write the SDK and give us suggestions how to use it properly, and the people who will judge the application are not the same people.
So even if Android SDK developers tell us not to worry about the UI too much right now (since it is still evolving), I'm actually quite sure that the judge's opinion of a program will be greatly influenced by an application's appearance. Who would not be impressed by a shiny GUI if you only have a couple of minutes to judge one of thousands of competition entries?
I just hope, that the next SDK update (that will hopefully appear before submission deadline) will address this question and provide a consistent GUI that let's all our applications shine out of the box. Or even better: Provide at least a few different themes. And: Please take care of all GUI elements, not just update a few to keep a messy and inconsistent look...

PS: At OpenIntents, we went the radical way to actually stick very closely to the new Android GUI, and created new icons in the Android m5 look. In this process I got to like the new look, which is basic and playful, yet functional - similar to the Google logo itself.

Of course, this would not make sense for every application. I'd also prefer e.g. a music player with cool and trendy skin.

My interpretation is that judges will be taking usability and ease-of-use into consideration, however UI look-and-feel would not weigh significantly in the judging process. It would be great to know whether or not this assumption is correct, so that developers can focus the appropriate amount of time on polishing their UI if need be.
Any developer or developer advocate wanna weigh in on this topic?
