Well, from what I've read, I thought switching courier's delivery from local to maildrop is a matter of putting: DEFAULTDELIVERY="| /usr/lib/courier/bin/maildrop" inside /usr/lib/courier/etc/courierd, replacing whatever was in its place,

Yes. Thanks for the clarification

copying /usr/lib/courier/etc/maildrop as maildropfilter,

No. That's something else.

and placing filter instructions in /usr/lib/courier/etc/maildroprc, no?

No. All that does is provide the default, global, mail filtering instructions. As far as enabling maildrop for local mail delivery, this is done by setting DEFAULTDELIVERY.

You did not specify which authentication modules you're using,

Well, I have courier-authlib-0.60.1 installed and set up to use a small userdb.

but if you're using ones that allow a mail account to explicitly specify the location of its mailbox,

I wanted my mail server's account virtual as far as the machine itself is concerned... The userdb I'm using specifies each user's mail dir inside a limited v_email real user account's home dir - somehow this is more to my liking instead of having the /home folder on the server filled with possibly growing number of small dirs...

that essentially overrides DEFAULTDELIVERY.

...and should this be noted somewhere in the docs? I'd do it, if I knew how....

This is a common problem experienced by those who follow the suggestion on some web site to set up all your mail accounts that either share the same home directory and differ only in their mailbox pathname;

So... if this is a snip from authenumerate's output, is it good?

=============SNIP==================== pgp 1006 100 /home/vmail/pgp /home/vmail/pgp/Maildir cnp 1006 100 /home/vmail/cnp /home/vmail/cnp/Maildir ldd 1006 100 /home/vmail/ldd /home/vmail/ldd/Maildir vpp 1006 100 /home/vmail/vpp /home/vmail/vpp/Maildir egp 1006 100 /home/vmail/egp /home/vmail/egp/Maildir gig 1006 100 /home/vmail/gig /home/vmail/gig/Maildir ============END-SNIP==================

or set both the home directory and the mailbox pathname to be the same. Doing so severely limits one's options ...you say "limit options", I like to think of it as peace of mind.... and makes it impossible to use maildrop. Now I know who shall I send my questions relating Courier! ;)

To use maildrop you must configure your mail accounts to look like real accounts: each one has its own home directory, and its mailbox is $HOME/Maildir.

Isn't there a way to make it work with the userdb/virual accounts I gave above? I don't see why real machine accounts are necessary - why shouldn't it work with virtual ones?

P.S. I really appreciate your effort to answer my stupid questions. Thanks, man!
