There's nothing wrong with this approach: Jabber is an open standard and
allows for that, and Google Talk (along with every Jabber server) becomes
more useful the as Jabber servers and Jabber users increase in numbers. You
should be happy Google is being very open about them picking an open standard
for their IM system that allows you to set yourself up the way you want and
still be able to communicate with Google users.
This isn't to say that development at Google for GT is dead: On the contrary,
Google developers are some of the most active Jabber developers.
