Why don't you just move your FreeBSD disk onto the primary controller (wdc0)? That would solve a LOT of problems with this boot. I think you mentioned there is only one device on each of those controllers.

The whole exercise was to get it going on the second controler, so I could install FBSD on a system that only had room for it there for a friend.

Your sugestion would solve my problem, but not the situation I'm working on
