Also consider upgrading to 4.4-stable. It has a new disk layout algorithm which some people have reported to provide speedups on the order of 20x (!)

(Though you have to empty and re-fill your paritions to take full advantage of it.)

I assume you're talking about the dirprefs code from OpenBSD, from that Russian guy ? That's been committed ? No more problems with fdisk and friends ?
