If I understand correctly, PAM acts as a standard connector between applications that require some kind of authentication mechanism, and the _real_ authentication scheme underneath; I don't think there is a single answer that will work for all PAM installations.

Sadly, I'm not a PAM expert, so you'll have to get help from somewhere else 8-(
