We're definitely looking to as many Google properties as possible to provide this information. AppEngine may be a bit tricky as it can be branded separately from Google, which makes our data providers very nervous. We'll try, but no promises =).

Hi Dion

What we'd really like to know is are there plans to make real-time data available via an API outside of Gadgets? For use say with App Engine? This would be a significant step in providing access to all.

Best wishes Neil

Yes, you can use our existing Google Finance Gadget API for access to realtime NYSE/NASDAQ data (and delayed for Toronto, London, New Zealand and Australia). This does not include any indices however, and may only be used when developing iGoogle-hosted gadgets.
