Currently Groovy is built with an Ant build framework that relies on a Maven POM and lots of use of the Maven Ant task. It works but there is far too much XML and not enough Groovy. In the past there were mutterings about a Gant build and indeed I started one, but I suspect no-one uses it (no one has complained about the bits that do not work).

To use a rather dreadful phrase but one that carries the right baggage: Groovy should eat its own dog food.

In this instance the claim is that Groovy makes a better build specification language than XML. So Groovy should use a Groovy-based build. The obvious choices are Gant and Gradle. Well actually the obvious choice is Gradle since it is a full project management oriented build framework.

Hopefully Hans will volunteer himself or someone to do the creation of a Gradle build for Groovy. The question is will people accept a move from Ant/Maven to Gradle once a sufficient build is ready?
