I understand that PCMCIA (e.g. PAO) and built-in sound hardware sometimes
get into wars with each other. You might want to check out PAO's
configuration as far as which IRQ's it thinks are free, etc.

It would appear that you have an IRQ or DRQ configuration error.
This should be obvious.
I actually have a similar Toshiba (a Satellite 220CDS), which exhibits
similar symptoms. My current suspicion is that the sound hardware is
partially PnP, and am investigating.
