Subject:[courier-users] Two problems with Outlook Express 6 and courier-imap

Hi.

We have two problems with Outlook Express 6 clients. I have discussed this with a friend of mine who is using the same combination (Outlook Express 6 and any version of courier-imap), and he is experiencing the same problems.

Problem number one then. When you receive a new mail, it, ofcourse, appears in OE as a highlighted unread mail. When you read it, OE removes the highlighting and tags it as read. But in about 50% of the times, the same message appears as unread again in a minute or two. The same thing happens if you try to delete a new message, the message appears again after a minute or two after beeing deleted. Sometimes you have to repeat the procedure 4-5 times until the status change or deletion will take real effect.

Problem number two. This doesn't happen very often, but can be quite annoying when it does. OE will report that you have a new mail, and it shows you (1) after the Inbox folder. But when you open the mailbox, you can't see the new mail. If you open the same mailbox in another mailprogram, like Mutt, Pine, Netscape or whatever, you'll see the new mail. But it will never appear in OE. It will tell you that you have a new mail in the folder until you delete it from the server, but there is no way to get OE to show you the message. I have not been able to find any special oddities in such a mail. You can receive three mails from the same person, and one of them just won't show up in OE.

Ofcourse, you can argue "Who uses OE anyway?" "Probably just another Microsoft bug", but please keep such comments to yourself. Most of our customers are using OE (we are an ISP), and telling them that it's Microsofts fault when OE works fine with other IMAP servers just doesn't work.

Some details then. The problem seams to appear on any Outlook Express client (atleast version 5 and 6), on any Windows version.

Our courier-imap servers are running under Solaris 8 on SPARC platforms. The maildir's are located on an NFS share (however, i've seen the same problem under Linux when not using NFS). We are currently running courier-imap 1.4.1, but my friend who has the same problem is using the latest version.

Any ideas?

Thank you.
