When I am able to connect to my LDAP server I will only need the libhmac.a file if I am going to use clearpw, but not if I use crypt. If I am understanding it correctly.

In my authldaprc file it says "CLEARPW is the clear text password. CRYPT is the crypted password. ONE OF THESE TWO ATTRIBUTES IS

That is not relevant. You cannot connect to the LDAP server in the first place.
