Does it strike anyone else that it should not be easy to create the problem scenario described here?

This is a wild guess, but sync works FAITHFULLY for us and I bet I know what you might be doing wrong.
I'll bet you have some clientspec "foobar" and two folks are using it.
The way this usually happens is user1 creates foobar and starts using it for his C: drive. User2 comes along and looks at foobar and says "that is EXACTLY the same layout that I want on my C: drive".
The correct procedure would be to "create/update using foobar as a Template" to create a new client spec, but instead User2 erases the "host" field and decides he'll just use it too.
From then on, your screwed and sync will seem to be broken to both users.
