pw prompt but it tells me access denied as root.

Now if someone wants to use exclusively the userdb instead of the system mapped systempw how might one do this.

userdbpw -md5 |/etc/userdb username set imapdpw

/etc/userdb is not a shell script, or an executable program.

It appears am not getting the right syntax for this.. in imapd.config it indicates authuserdb is one of the defaults that is usable.

The userdb script is located in the sbin subdirectory, not in /etc
