Each piece of locally-delivered incoming email is checked for spam and viruses, using the xfilter mechanism in maildrop. However my server is running UserMode Linux with 64 MB of RAM, and it drops to its knees whenever it is simultaneously checking one message for spam and another for viruses.

I have a P90 with 128MB ram, I know what you mean.

What I really want is to be able to limit the number of simultaneous delivery threads to one. I don't mind enqueueing messages while waiting for delivery, as in the long-term the server can always keep up with the incoming mail flow. However I would like to prevent more than one message from being processed by maildrop at the same time, as this results in an unnecessary burden on my wimpy server.
