[ Snip ]

The background of this whole thing is that I want to have IMAP folders like Inbox, Sent and Trash which reside on the same hierarchy level. If I just let Courier direct mail to ~/Maildir and access ~/Maildir with my e-mail client (KMail) via IMAP, I have a top level folder Inbox and all other folders I create are located below Inbox. This is, of course, nonsensical.

While I fully sympathize with Wolfgang's efforts to make something behave in a way that suits his preferences, I take issue with the idea that folders below Inbox is "nonsensical".

To me, it is eminently logical: mail comes in to Inbox and fans out to the otherfolders. Inbox is the logical parent of those folders. Granted, one of the major advantages of IMAP is the ability to have server-side sorting, so in many cases I never see the mail item in Inbox ('cos it is moved directly to another folder), but when something misses the server-side sorting the Inbox->FinalFolder hierarchy makes sense to me, and is also entirely consistent with the way my (snail, paper) mail gets handled: mail arrives in my in box which is at desk-top height, and ends up in the trash can, which is on the floor. Same hierarchy! <grin>
