Hi harry. Can you be more specific about what you're hoping to do with the Google Maps API? While the Google Mashup Editor does not allow for the placement of custom widgets on a map display (other than the "create pin" buttons that are custom to GME), it does enable you to build an interactive application around your map -- for example, you can display geo-tagged photos as a list and, when a list entry is selected, show the exact location where it was taken on a Google map display using a handful of lines.
