How do you handle things like retrieving external content/rss feeds, etc? Do you have a local server-side component? Can you duplicate the whole home page with dragging and dropping of gadgets, etc? Or what exactly would your offline dev environment support?

What I have currently works pretty well IMHO. In fact given another week or so, I think this offline dev thing will work with most gadgets. I have spent quite a bit of time on this little project and so far it has not been too technically challenging to code even tho it's pretty hacky stuff!

So Adam, Dann, or Gordy: what's the deal? Is there anyway we can get this idea pushed through whilst still keeping on the right side of the terms and conditions? At the end of the day, it's for the good of iGoogle. Offline / local development speeds up development time massively and I think developers will love it. If it's deemed to be too dodgy then of course I'm just going to have to keep it to myself which won't help anyone.

I would love to have such a tool. I looked into it myself as well, but realized that it would require a huge effort to duplicate the API's and make everything work correctly, so I abandoned the idea :) Also, you may want to read the terms closely - I think that you would actually be breaking the rules by duplicating or reverse-engineering the API to work locally.

HI All,

I am in the process of developing an offline development kit for Google Gadgets :-)

I wanted to gauge the amount of interest for such a thing. It all came about as I was sat on a train with my laptop. Without an Internet connection I was unable to really do any development of a gadget. So I have decided to so something about it! As well as permitting offline development it will also be far easier and quicker doing it all locally and hopefully this little project will permit that too.

Has anyone else had a similar experience of know any techniques which allow for offline development? At the moment my system is not quite working but it will be soon!
