You could keep all your history in one branch (this essential becomes your trunk), and create a branch every time you release a new version. Here we just call our trunk "latest" and this is where development for the current release takes place.

Yikes, I didn't mean to start such a thread. I'll have to make sure I consult the archives before posting ;-)

One of the reasons I wanted to know if this feature existed is because of a problem (feature?) I ran into in the Windows client.

It seems that when you branch and try to view the history of the branched file, it doesn't show you the history prior to the branch, I understand why and it makes sense however there are cases where I need this information. Putting it into $Log made the most sense to me.

There probably is a way to do this via scripting and the command-line but a lot of my users are Windows GUI guys that don't do the command-line (at least not without a lot of wailing and teeth gnashing).

We have recently migrated from MS VSS to Perforce. One feature I miss is the ability to replace patterns in my code with information from VSS. This feature gives me the ability to put the history for a file in the source. Does such a mechanism exist in Perforce?
