Actually, MKS Source Integrity uses this term for the equivalent concept.

And since MKS-RCS was my first experience with an SCM system, it's not surprising that I prefer sandbox. :->

Looking through the CVS docs, it looks like "working copy" is the phrase of choice there. Though on the cvs lists, sandbox is often used and understood there.
