SketchUp is the only application using almost ALL of the OpenGL functions. Virtually no other OpenGL program comes close (including games.)
Regarding OpenGL, the SketchUp development team changed version 6 in one primary feature. They made OpenGL hardware acceleration ON by default. (All prior versions had hardware turned OFF by default.) It was a judgement call on their part. I assume that they figured that OpenGL compliance in graphics drivers had improved to the point that it could be counted on to work on most installations.
If you've read alot of OpenGL posts, then many of them were likely posted by me. Why advise turning off hardware acceleration? Because it usually works. We at the Help Group are not Google employees, but users like you, who volunteer to help others. If the advice works for other people, and they accept it, and are glad to have SU working, how then does that harm you?
You think Google SU ought to take a serious look at this? That's probably the single most important issue with which they wrestle (conjecture, on my part.) If the SU development changes OpenGL support for SU version 7, I wouldn't be surprised if they again made the hardware acceleration default setting to be OFF, to avoid all the whining.
I, too, have an nVidia card (Quadro FX) and look forward to the day when the manufacturer gets the driver right. But, for now, I have to work with anti-aliasing turned off (0x). That's okay by me. I can use SU, visualize ideas and get them 'on paper,' and it's probably one of the best FREE programs I've ever used.
The SU team has acknowledged that some recent nVidia drivers have 'broken' OpenGL functions that had previously been worked out (in a cooperative effort between nVidia, @Last and Google.) I've found that a 6-month-old nVidia driver works better on my system than does the latest driver. Go figure...
Gratefully, Taff
