Hi,

I am only guessing but I think Access is down loading all the data, rather than doing what Microsoft says it should do, which is passing the SQL command directly to the Database server and waiting for the answer. For example when I ran the same query with Crystal Reports, which can only talk with ODBC servers, the query took 2 seconds. With Access it took 5 minutes! However, doing a pass through query with access the time came down to a couple of seconds.

However, as you said no one seems to know the answer and how can I make the pass through query interactive, rather than writing some 40 queries for every search combination?

David, Because of the problems you mentioned I had to rewrite two of my forms. You will have to stick with Access native queries, you have no choice. There is not much you can do. I wasted hours trying to get help from this list, seems like nobody knows.

P.S. By the way, check if your ODBC tracing is turned on. If it is, that might be the reason your queries are so slow.

Hi,

I know this is slightly off topic but I have a performance problem with access and ODBC. To solve the problem I have resorted to using access "Pass Through" SQL queries. This resulted to reducing the search time from several minutes to several seconds.

However, because the SQL query is now passed straight through to the ODBC database, all the search criteria has to be hard coded. I believe it cannot be changed on the fly. For example I cannot create a dialog box for the user to input variables...... unless someone out there knows different.

I would be very grateful for any help on this - I have been tearing my hair out trying to create a VB script to achieve the correct result.

Thanks

David
