I installed mysql-3.23.39-pc-solaris2.8-i386.tar.gz into /usr/local and created a link to it from /usr/local/mysql. My machine is a Compaq deskpro running Solaris 8. As soon as I try to run mysqld I get a segmentation fault (core dump).
I download the source code and compiled it. Then I used make_binary_distribution.sh to make a binary distribution and it works fine. I noticed that the binary from www.mysql.com was missing the mysql_install_db and mysql.server files (they were 0 length). Is there any chance that some other important file is missing?
Thanks, Andrew. I misunderstood your previous message. I thought that the version you compiled yourself coredumped when you made a binary distribution of it, but worked if you used 'make install'.
It is quite possible that there is something more wrong with the tarball we have on our site, besides the two empty files. I do not know the details of how it is built, so someone else will take over this problem.
Thank you for reporting and clarifying the problem.
