sorry maybe I wasn't clear, I had the file MY.CNF in the root of C:\ that contextually pointed to another directory F:\mysql where it was originally installed. After I reinstalled on C:\mysql the file pointing to F:\mysql caused a similar problem. Since I install on the root of C:\ the file wasn't necessary.

Ron T. may have "mis-spoken", but for the sake of accuracy, the file in the root of the C: drive needs to be MY.CNF

I had this problem once before. It was because I originally installed on another directory. I created the my.cfg file to point to that installation. Later I re-installed to C:\ but didn't remove that file.

I cannot get mysqld running on my NT4 server with service pack 6.
I've tried starting mysqld-nt as --standalone also with no success (same connect error).
