But shouldn't performance be up to the customer? If performance is too slow, the customer should have the optioneither: - rework the trigger - eliminate the trigger - buy faster hardware

But let the customer decide!

I've decided i'd like a client side trigger to handle this situation because we can't get fast enough hardware to support a system of our size. We can do without, but that's not exactly a friendly customer attitude, is it?
