We already have a Google map
We have some TransXChange data we are planning to submit to Google transit.
Can anybody tell me if it is possible to show the Google transit results on our existing Google map?
From what I have seen, the publicly available features for the customization of Google Maps are limited to placing points (the little flags with annotations), and integration of Google Maps on a web site like http://westsussex.cdmf.info/. Wikipedia has a nice write-up about Google Maps customization: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_maps#Extensibility_and_customization I believe with westsussex.cdmf.info, you have taken Google Maps as far as reasonably possible at this point. Even with a higher level of customization available to the public, you still need a trip planning engine with a front end interface to respond to customer queries. So, at this point, you cannot show the Google transit results on your existing Google map. You have to work with Google Labs, where the integration of transit data happens and the trip planning engine is running. You need to sign an agreement with Google Labs and make your transit data available to Google Labs in the Google Transit specific data feed format. Start here: http://www.google.com/help/faq_transit.html#adding_an_agency If you have data in the TransXChange format, you can transform this data to the Google Transit specific data feed format with the program available on my site, http://www.googletransitdatafeed.org. You can download it, and run it to generate the Google Transit specific file set. I have to tell you that the program has not seen exposure to real transit data yet, so there's a good chance it does not create the desired results - in the first try. I am definitely interested in working with you to straighten the program out, as needed, to create data in the Google Transit specific file format. Note that some work on the data might be required on your part, e.g. providing geo-coded stop coordinates in the WGS-84 format. Also, some scheduling systems are surprisingly "sloppy" in allowing inconsistencies between network and schedule data. This might need some attention as well. You never know until you try. As the last step, you need to post the Google Transit data feed format files on the Internet. This means they need to be accessible with an URL, such as: http://westsussex.cdmf.info/20061102/google_transit_20061102.zip
We would love to have the trip data plotted on our existing map which would show the planned trip beside existing roadworks, accidents etc on the map.
I do not see how you can have it both ways available on your site only, at least at this point. You either integrate / customize Google Maps on your site, without the availability of any trip planning features, or participate in Google Transit and integrate your transit data on their end.
If not, can we place our traffic data on the google transit map?
Yes, see above. At this point, this is a clumsy multi-step process. It's still all getting started and there is room for improvement which I will work on if I can get interest in my site. Again, let me offer you to work with you to get you up and running. JP
