I tried to create a new file, for the local domain, and placed alias definitions in there, but I was unable to get this to work properly.  I created (for example) a localdomain.com file, and put the following entr y in it:

<URL:mailto:ali@localdomain.com:>ali@localdomain.com: <URL:mailto:re aln@localdomain.com>real@localdomain.com

and then ran makealiases.  However, email to this new alias is bounced "User Unknown"...  I also tried using the webadmin interface to create t he alias, which yielded a webadmin file in the aliases dir containing prett y much the same thing, but still to no avail.

Is "localdomain.com" a local domain (i.e. in your locals file)?  If so, t hen it gets stripped off the address and your alias should look like this:

alias: realname

Ah, thanks.  I tried that, and now I'm getting a different error:

<<< configuration error: mail loops back to myself (MX problem).

Any thoughts?
