Is the SMI to EMI upgrade on either the 3750 or 3550 a software upgrade or an actual hardware upgrade as it is with the 2950?

Pure software upgrade.

Is this true for 3750 Metro switch?

The 3750 Metro upgrades are just licensing, not even a software upgrade.

There is no EMI/SMI but "Base"/"IP Services"/"Advanced IP"..

There are only EMI images, but there are different licenses: ME3750-IPBASE-LIC 0$ ME3750-ADVIP-LIC 12k$ ME3750-IPSVC-LIC 3k$ (GPL)
