I think that it all comes together pretty well, you just need to see the farther reaching implications of some things when you think about how to combine them together. Just remember that anything that happens as a matter of course on the Android platform happens for a reason, and that reason is probably related to mobile development-- think about everything from this perspective, and you can usually figure out the justification the developers used.
I would recommend printing the samples, starting eclipse projects for each of them, and typing their code in manually, then just think about what you could change here and there to drop the demo code into a new project with as few changes as possible, and what function it could serve. If they actually intend for the API Demos to be the inspiration for Design Patterns, which I'm certain they do, then your job just comes down to using the ideas expressed in the API demos like Lego Bricks to put your program together, and rolling up your own classes only when you need to.
My blog is actually about this sort of thing, it's linked in my profile if you're interested.

Ok, I'm a bit new at this whole thing (I know we all are since the SDK was released only a few days ago), but I mean I'm sort of new to Java in general and have only a little bit of experience with it. That's ok, though, because I haven't had any major problems just yet but something has got me curious - what's with all of the references to "ICICLE"? Is this a term relating to Java that I've just missed, or was it the original code name for Android? I can't seem to find any explanations or references to it other than in the code itself.
