I also had exactly the same problem on WIN XP Home, it
wanted to connect to the server through 10061, I have no clue why. Anyway, what I did in the command prompt is, enter: mysql-max-nt
and then enter: net start mysql
c:\mysql\bin>net start mysql
And it started! That's all I needed. Actgually I got this great advice from Kevin, below.

Francesco, if you have firewall software, you should configure it to allow connections on port 3309.

Well, I can't help much with the problem - but the 10061 is not a port number. Its an error coder returned from winsock when it attempted to connect: 10061 No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. WSAECONNREFUSED

I don't understand what you are doing with port 10061.
Try editing you're my.INI file. Change port references to 3309.
Also make sure you don't have a my.cnf file in C: root directory. It won't have an extension shown because cnf is a speeddial config file, but if there is a "my" file in C:\ delete it.

Hello, the problem persists with Mysql using various versions on Windows. I have installed installed in default directory, C:\Mysql, and I have runned C:\MySql\mysql-nt.exe to start the server, and I have runned C:\Mysql\winmysqladmin.exe to install the service,but the service doesn't start and If I run C:\Mysql\mysql.exe I always encountered following error: Can't connect to Mysql Server on localhost: 10061. I don't undestard how to use WinMysqlAdmin to set up default configuration file entries and install the service. Could someone help me please.
